How Companies Can Make Their Products/Services More Sustainable

This week we will be exploring how Nike has incorporated sustainability in their products and services. Right now, sustainability is a big trend. Companies along with consumers have been making an effort to be more sustainable in order to help the world become healthier and renewable. For companies to make their products and services more sustainable, they must:

  • Use low impact materials, this will ensure that the product is durable for sustainability
  • Avoid un-recyclable materials
  • Avoid single use plastics
  • Pay attention to water use

Nike Sustainable Products and Services:

Nike has been improving in the best way possible in terms of their sustainability. Since 2017, they have introduced Flyleather, which is "a new super material made with ~50% recyclable leather fibers, using 90% less water, and an 80% lower carbon footprint.  The product is created to maximize performance as it’s 5x more durable and 40% lighter than regular leather". This is very similar to their Flyknit material which was introduced to the market in 2012.

In 2015, Nike had also still been trying their best to reduce their carbon footprint, improve the innovation & creativity and transform their manufacturing to ensure that sustainability is one of their top, main objectives. For example:

  • Nike used 54 million lbs of scrap material and transformed it into the premium material they always have
  • They reduced their per footwear unit water use by 43%
Not only that but they are still striving to make leaps in the right direction in terms of sustainability. Their goals and objectives continue to consider the future of the world, following the trends of the public and how they need to be aware of the state of the world.

Environmentally Friendly Products will only do less damage to the environment compared to Sustainable Products will benefit the environment in the end while also not doing any damage to the environment.
